Last-Minute Halloween Fun with DIY Ghost Applique!

With Halloween just around the corner, many of us are pulling out all the stops to add those final festive touches to our homes. If you’re like me and love sneaking in a quick, creative project, you’ll love this simple yet charming way to bring a bit of spooky spirit into your decor! Using my Ghost Applique Templates, you can make something truly special in no time!

Why Applique?
Applique is perfect for fast, eye-catching designs without committing to a lengthy project. (well...it depends on the project.) Whether it’s a fun placemat, a pillow cover, or a cute wall hanging, applique lets you create unique handmade items to elevate your holiday decor. Plus, there’s just something special about crafting your own decorations!

So I created FREE Ghost Applique Templates for you! It comes with two sizes and here are some handmade project ideas using the templates.

Small template - I originally planned to do hand applique, so I prepared my ghost and eye motifs using freezer paper. However, things came up, and I ran out of time, so I switched to machine applique.

I used a 12-inch square for the background and cut it to an 11 1/2-inch circle shape. The easiest way to cut the circle shape is to use a plate from your kitchen!

I used blanket stitches and finished with straight-line quilting. Then, I cut out the circular shape and added bias binding.

Large Template - I used (30) 2 1/2-inch squares from my scraps. Each row has 5 squares, and each column has 6 squares. Piece them together, pressing the seams open.
Apply your favorite double-sided fusible web to the back of the pieced squares, then cut out the ghost shape. Machine applique the ghost onto the background fabric, then add the eyes to the ghost.

I used zigzag stitches and brought both thread tails to the backside, tying knots to secure them.

This project might be suited for an intermediate level. I also created a version using the quilt-as-you-go technique for the ghost and reverse applique for the ghost shape as a frame. For the eyes, I cut out the shapes using double-sided fusible web and finished them with blanket stitches.

I made a quilt sandwich and quilted the web lines on my BERNINA B480 using Mettler Silk-Finish Cotton thread 60wt (Color #1423). If you're a BERNINA sewing machine user and interested in the stitch number, here’s a photo of the screen.
